- While the hardware for an ethernet port is probably a tad more expensive
- than that for a conventional serial port, the problem is somewhere else:
-
- How do you communicate over ethernet?
- Now, for me, and many other people, the answer is obvious: you run a
- TCP/IP stack and for terminal style applications Telnet.
-
- 1. This adds (significant?) cost to the modem firmware.
- 2. Although the current Internet craze is pushing IP even in the home, I
- think there are still many PC people who would prefer to drop dead
- instantly rather than having to install an ethernet and a TCP/IP
- stack in order to access their modem.

- I haven't seen an ISDN modem (i.e. a device that connects to the ISDN
- but communicates with POTS modems; available in some TAs) with ethernet
- yet, but there are routers and bridges that connect networks by ISDN,
- and of course you can use these also for single hosts. E.g. my Internet
- access is through a dedicated IP-over-ISDN router (a left-over minimal
- 386 with a cheap passive ISDN card and the BANZAI! package).
